After weeks of storage, a massive crane made its grand appearance in Mainz's market square, hauling a 16-ton bronze-clad pillar. Its base, a sturdy mix of reinforced concrete, supported this hefty load.
On a chilly Wednesday morning, the crane unveiled its cargo—the Heunensäule, a city icon. Following the wrapping up of construction work, the pillar needed a comeback to its original post in front of the cathedral.
The crane's arrival marked the beginning of a process requiring the revamping of the concrete slab and sandy base for the Heunensäule to stand solid and proud once more.
The stage was set, and the historic pillar completed its two-and-a-half-hour journey back to its rightful slot in late March, vacated due to construction work.
The Heunensäule is not only a beloved icon of Mainz but also an essential stop in the city tour, weaving tales of its proud history.
Fifty years ago, the Heunensäule graced Mainz to celebrate the millennium of the cathedral. Crafted a thousand years ago in Miltenberg am Main for the Mainz cathedral, it never found its original purpose there, instead becoming an enduring emblem of the city's rich history.
