At the heart of Oktoberfest, the world-renowned beer festival in Munich, lies a rich tapestry of craftsmanship. From early July, when the setup began, a multitude of skilled artisans have been hard at work, ensuring the festival's success.
Painters and varnishers have given the tents a perfect finish with unique colours and patterns, transforming them into many different biotopes, each with a distinct style and ambiance. The Augustiner, Schottenhamel, Käfer, and Hofbräu tents, among others, boast of their individual themes, thanks to the efforts of carpenters, joiners, and metalworkers.
Bakers have not been left behind, providing the traditional Wiesn pretzel, a beloved snack at Oktoberfest. Butchers offer a variety of hearty meals, from oxen fritters to pork knuckle, while tailors provide traditional outfits like dirndls and leather pants for Oktoberfest attire.
The traditional band in every Wiesn tent is equipped by metalwind and hand-pulled instrument makers, while gunsmiths craft the guns used in traditional shows. Electricians ensure the smooth operation of lighting, music, roller coaster, and beer tap, and installation mechanics ensure the running water for washing.
The Chamber of Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria has been thanking these craftsmen and women for their work. Coopers are responsible for making the barrels used at Oktoberfest, and saddlers make the beautiful harnesses for horse-drawn carriages. Sign and lighting manufacturers make the Oktoberfest's nighttime light show possible.
