Aschaffenburg Joins 'Abpflastern' Initiative to Green Urban Spaces

Aschaffenburg has joined the nationwide 'abpflastern' initiative, aiming to enhance urban climate and improve residents' quality of life. The project encourages citizens to replace sealed surfaces with greenery, with winners to be honoured in November 2025.

The initiative, organized by students of the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design in Koblenz, has already seen success in Nilkheim. A small square at the corner of Buchenweg/Ulmenweg was redesigned, with approximately 315 sqm of sealed surface removed. This was replaced with a lawn, three trees, and new benches, while the fountain remained.

Citizens are invited to participate by entering unsealed areas into a special online portal until October 31, 2025. Three winning municipalities will be honoured in November 2025, with a 'Star of the Month' project crowned each month leading up to the final awards.

Aschaffenburg's participation in the 'abpflastern' initiative supports cities and citizens in bringing more nature into everyday urban life and combating climate change. The project aims to create greener, more livable spaces, with the first results already visible in Nilkheim.
