Party Time at SummerSounds 2025: A Hilly Fete of Music, Culture, and Cuisine!

Gear up, folks! The SummerSounds Festival, nestled in the picturesque Neustadtswallanlagen, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in style this year. Kicking off with an energetic bang on the University of Technology, Modern, and Shakespeare Company grounds, the festivities are a symphony of music, culture, and culinary delights, all blending together in an intoxicating harmony. The vibe is electric, and the spirit of the crowd is palpable.

The festival organizers have curated a musical extravaganza with over 20 live acts gracing four stages. The lineup caters to every musical taste bud, from jazz and experimental music to rap, hip-hop, DJ sets, karaoke, ska, chanson, and more. And guess what? It's all free! Funded through donations, sponsorships, and public funding, the festivities are a testament to the power of community spirit.

The turnout on the inaugural day was massive, with a significant police presence ensuring safety and maintaining a relaxed, peaceful, and celebratory atmosphere. The weather gods are looking all Carmina Burana on us, ushering in even more festival-goers today. So, here's a snapshot of Friday's events:

Friday's Impressions:

  • Feeling as chill as a glass of iced beer on a hot day
  • Marcoca, a multi-genre powerhouse, whisked us away on a psychedelic journey, spinning tunes that ranged from surf-rock to jazz and soul. Their set was a cornucopia of groove, emotion, and madness, creating a musical universe that transports you.
  • Ethnique Punch, the Turkish-speaking rapper, brought oriental vibes, hip-hop beats, and global bass to the stage. Accompanied by DJ First Claas, their performance was a fusion of tradition and urban sound, filled with energy and diversity.
  • The Blue Note Bach Quartet serenaded the crowd with jazz arrangements and improvisations based on compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, creating a unique blend of modern and classical music.
  • Karaoke, hosted by the ubiquitous Taylor Swiffer aka Laszlo L'Aspi Radora, saw countless revellers crooning their hearts out.
  • DJ sets kept the crowd dancing all night long.
  • Caterers were dishing out mouthwatering treats to appease those rumbling tummies.

Now, we're looking forward to Saturday's festivities. The highly anticipated Austrian sibling duo Abor & Tynna is set to take the hill stage, representing Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest.
