Berlin Residents Called Upon to Carry Out Bird Count, from Sparrows to Snowy Owls - Berlin's residents urge for avian census

Are you ready to bird-watch like a pro and contribute to nature conservation? Berlin's city area is teeming with avian species, from the agile Peregrine falcon to the vibrant blue kingfisher. This year, the Nature Conservation Union (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association (LBV) are encouraging Berliners to join their annual "Hour of Garden Birds" event from May 9 to 11. Here's the lowdown on how to participate!

Chaffinches, with their red faces and yellow wing stripes, are a common sight in central Berlin. Once you've clocked those, look out for the redstart with its distinctive, bobbing red tail. The outskirts of the city are the place to find them. Don't forget to jot down the common residents like sparrows and pigeons, too.

Last year, over 36,000 birds were counted across the city, and this year you can be part of it! Join the week-long adventure by observing birds from a quiet spot – your garden, park, or even a window. Count the highest number of each species you spot within an hour and submit your results via the internet, app, or post. Not only will you be helping the nature conservation associations gain valuable insights into current bird dynamics, but you'll also be supplementing official population trends.

Want to get involved? Berlin's NABU groups are eager to welcome you! The Lichtenberg district group will be counting on May 11 at 9:00 AM in the Wartenberger field. If you're a family with young kids, you're in luck! On May 10 at 2:00 PM, there's a special session in the Rummelsburger Bucht just for them.

Stay tuned for more information on bird species found in and around Berlin: common shelducks, black terns, ospreys, common cranes, and wood pigeons are just a few of the feathered friends you might come across. For specific counts from events like the "Hour of Garden Birds," it's best to consult local birding groups or event organizers directly. Happy birdwatching and conservation!
