Bhumi and Samiksha Pednekar Introduce Backbay: A Freshly Started Journey in Sustainable Water Drinking
New Beverage Brand Backbay Launches, Offering Sustainable Hydration Solution
Backbay, a next-generation beverage brand, has been launched in India, aiming to reimagine hydration for the modern Indian lifestyle. The brand, founded by actress and sustainability advocate Bhumi Pednekar and her sister, lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Samiksha Pednekar, focuses on wellness, sustainability, and conscious consumption.
Backbay's debut offering, Backbay Aqua, is set to enter the market at the end of August. This natural mineral water is sourced from a protected Himalayan reservoir in the foothills, bottled at source in a women-led facility in Himachal Pradesh. The water is naturally alkaline, slowly filtered through mineral-rich formations which impart magnesium, calcium, and potassium, offering hydration benefits and a clean, crisp taste.
The brand's packaging is designed as a sustainable alternative to traditional PET packaging. It comes in lightweight, fully recyclable cartons made from FSC-certified paperboard, topped with plant-based caps made from sugarcane resin. The packaging is engineered to withstand India’s heat without chemical leaching.
Backbay emphasizes integrity, long-term environmental impact, and prioritizes people and the planet. Every aspect—from sourcing to packaging to user experience—reflects values of purpose, purity, and mindful consumerism.
Backbay Aqua will be available through a mix of high-impact retail and quick-commerce channels. These include Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, the brand's own D2C website, Amazon, Nature's Basket, Foodstories, and select hospitality partners.
Bhumi Pednekar commented on the lack of innovation and trust in the bottled water space, describing Backbay as a "cleaner, safer choice" that addresses these gaps. Samiksha Pednekar highlighted water as the "most overlooked daily product" and saw the brand as an opportunity to bring clarity and simplicity to hydration choices rooted in design and conscious sourcing.
