Bicycle Path Under Schiersteiner Bridge Linking Mainz and Wiesbaden Now Accessible - Simplified Journey to Rettbergsaue
The Schiersteiner Bridge cycle path, offering a safe and comfortable connection between Mainz and Wiesbaden over the Rhine, finally opened to the public on Friday, August 2023. However, the path's journey to completion was not without its challenges.
Construction errors led to damages to the bicycle bridge at Schiersteiner Brücke, causing a delay in the opening of the bike path. Each concrete element weighed over 400 kilograms, and heavy concrete blocks used to secure the construction site inadvertently damaged the railing and surface of the new cycle gear.
Unfortunately, the path's troubles didn't end there. Unknown individuals vandalised the entrance to the cycle path, toppling several concrete elements and causing significant damage to the terrain and the surface of the path. This incident further delayed the completion of the path from the Mainz side.
Janina Steinkrüger, Mainz's Green Party environment commissioner, sharply criticised the Federal Highway Company for the delays in the completion of the Schiersteiner Bridge cycle path. Steinkrüger has previously voiced concerns about the company's work.
Despite these setbacks, Maximilian Angst, spokesman for the Federal Highway West, explained that the blocking of the path is not a trivial matter due to a special component on the cycle path that requires time for repairs. The city of Mainz worked diligently to remove the large concrete blocks blocking access, ensuring the path could be opened for public use.
The surface of the cycle path boasts a special coating with a grip against slipperiness, which is crucial for traffic safety. This unique feature, along with the path's strategic location as the only land connection to the recreational area on the Rettbergsau from the Mainz side, makes the Schiersteiner Bridge cycle path a valuable addition to the city's transportation network.
While the path's opening was delayed, Steinkrüger expressed relief at its eventual completion. For cyclists seeking a scenic and convenient route between Mainz and Wiesbaden, the Schiersteiner Bridge cycle path is now open for use.
