Root Down Expands Presence in Asheville's Food Scene

Root Down, the popular Creole and Southern soul food truck, has made a significant move from the streets of Asheville to brick-and-mortar establishments[1]. As of July 28, 2025, the food truck has established two permanent locations in the city, marking a shift from its mobile operations to physical restaurants.

One of these locations is at Terra Nova Beer Company's South Slope brewing district. Root Down will take over the kitchen permanently in early August, adding a new dining option to the area. This move comes as Terra Nova's South Slope location has been struggling, with revenue down by 50-60% in June and July compared to the same months last year[1].

The other brick-and-mortar location for Root Down can be found at Terra Nova's Swannanoa taproom. The food truck found a new home at this location earlier this year, following the destruction of its previous location at Salvage Station by floodwaters during Tropical Storm Helene in late 2021[1]. The Swannanoa River rose to a record 27.33 feet during the flooding, causing significant damage to the area.

Dano Holcomb, chef and owner of Root Down, was left without work following the flood. However, he is now back in business, with plans to introduce new menu items at his brick-and-mortar locations. One such item is a Chicago beef sandwich inspired by Cajun flavors[1].

Meanwhile, Terra Nova Beer Co. is also making changes to boost its business. The brewery is increasing production of Czech lagers and pilsners to offer lighter, easy-drinking beers[1]. Additionally, Terra Nova plans to introduce a small cocktail program to expand its beverage options and appeal to a broader audience.

The expansion of Root Down and changes at Terra Nova come at a time when the tourism industry in Asheville is facing challenges. Overnight lodging demand declined by 8% between July 2024 and May, according to a report in The Citizen Times[1]. Despite this, businesses in Swannanoa, including Root Down, are reopening after being devastated by the storm. Brett, the general manager, expressed concern about the lack of local customers in the downtown district and hopes that Root Down will attract more guests[1].

Previously, Terra Nova's South Slope and Swannanoa locations were home to Loott House and Mission Pizza respectively. However, Mission Pizza's departure from Asheville was due to Tropical Storm Helene, according to Julie Ransdell, co-owner of Terra Nova[1]. Interim chef Jake Sheets has served South Slope customers under his restaurant concept, Tony's, during the transitional weeks.

As Root Down continues to grow and Terra Nova makes changes, the food and drink scene in Asheville is set to undergo further transformation. With new dining options and beverage choices, the city is sure to attract food lovers from far and wide.
