Burgos Celebrates El Cid's Legacy with Grand Medieval Parade and Historic Revelations
Burgos recently hosted a grand celebration, Cid Week, attracting thousands of visitors. The event honoured the legendary Castilian nobleman, El Cid, and his legacy in the Reconquista. A medieval parade, led by reenactors of the Cid's troops, marched through historic streets, culminating in a speech by journalist Antonio Pérez Henares.
The parade route took participants through Fernán González, Avellanos, La Paloma, Plaza Mayor, and Paseo del Espolón, streets steeped in history. More than 800 reenactors from across Spain brought the medieval era to life. The event included combat competitions, historical exhibitions, and screenings of the film 'El Cid'.
Pérez Henares, author of 'El Juglar', delivered the Cid Week Speech. He highlighted the significance of the Cantar de mio Cid in Spanish literature and language. In a surprising revelation, he announced that a descendant of the Cid, Alfonso VIII, is buried in Burgos. Alfonso VIII, a later king of Castile, led the Christian coalition to victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, centuries after the time of El Cid.
