Famed Wolffenbüttel bakery, Reuss, has been a beloved presence since its 1944 establishment. Now, with four branches including the flagship on Dr. Heinrich-Jasper Straße, it's gearing up for a nationwide spotlight.

A Wolfenbüttel native takes the TV plunge

The daughter of the current owners, Thomas and Kerstin Macenauer, Joana Macenauer, is stepping out of her comfort zone. She will grace TV screens nationwide starting July 2nd on Sat.1, in the popular baking show, "Das große Backen." Some might have caught a glimpse of her at her ice cream parlor "Kühle Kugel" in Braunschweig's Altewiekring.

From Sweet Shop to the Silver Screen

Upon opening her homemade ice cream parlor last year, Joana brought her family bakery experience to the table. Her educational journey included an apprenticeship as a pastry chef at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg and further training as a chocolatier. Joana eventually became a master pastry chef and baker. However, her heart had always yearned to stay within the Wolfenbüttel family business. "I've always wanted to do this," she told News38 in an interview.

Two years ago, during her pastry chef apprenticeship, she and a friend decided to seize an opportunity. They applied for the TV show "Das große Backen". However, the competition was put on hold due to the pandemic. Last year, she received an unexpected call. The producers wanted her to participate in the show on her own. "At that time, we had a lot going on at 'Kühle Kugels'," she remembers. "So I had to think about it for a while. Participating alone is more challenging than as a team."

Showcasing Skills on a Grand Scale

In the end, Joana decided to take the stage on "Das große Backen." Last winter, she found herself in front of cameras in Berlin, alongside eight other contestants and a crew of cameras, sound, and makeup. "There were many people involved in the shoot," Joana recalls. This was quite different from her bakery work. "You have very high time pressure and different work processes." Tasks she usually took days to perfect had to be done within a mere twelve hours.

Stay Tuned for More Exciting Updates

"There were some nerve-wracking moments," Joana recalls. "Just like in my daily work in the bakery, there are things you can't predict." It promises to be an enthralling watch as the Wolfenbüttel native navigates the TV show.

In case you missed it, Joana Macenauer is a master baker and confectioner from the Bäckerei Reuss in Wolfenbüttel, also a Dozentin (lecturer) at the Handwerkskammer Koblenz. She's set to compete alongside other skilled bakers in the sixth season of "Das große Backen – Die Profis," which is slated to air on SAT.1. The exact start date is not yet confirmed, but it'll follow the announcement of the show's return. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting baking extravaganza!
