Celebrating Juneteenth with Barbecues and Dialogue: Anacostia's Cookouts and Discussions featuring BBQ and History
In the heart of D.C.'s Official Arts and Culture District, a significant event is set to take place on June 19, 2023. The Juneteenth Cookouts & Conversations, or Juneteenth Grillin' Out, will unfold at 1234 Marion Barry Ave. SE, promising an afternoon of good food, live music, and meaningful community connection.
Anacostia Park, the venue for this event, has a rich and complex history. Originally, the park was a segregated public space, with facilities such as swimming pools restricted by race. One of the most notable events reflecting this segregation was the 1949 Anacostia Pool Riot, a pivotal moment showing white resistance to integration in the park.
During World War II, Section C of Anacostia Park served as the city's first military recreation area for Black soldiers, operating from 1941 to 1943. Meanwhile, Section D, designated for White residents, boasted full amenities including a golf course and "fun center."
The long struggle for desegregation was part of the civil rights movement’s efforts to dismantle systemic racial barriers to access. By the mid-20th century, as legal segregation was dismantled nationally, barriers to integration in parks like Anacostia Park began to fall. The Juneteenth Grillin' Out event will feature free hot dogs and hamburgers, live performances by Off the Grid Band, lawn games, and a community panel discussion with the theme "Passage to Progress."
