The streets of Bad Vilbel came alive on Saturday as the Hessentag festival began under clear skies, drawing in a throng of attendees. Organizers anticipated a massive turnout of tens of thousands throughout the day, and they weren't disappointed. One spokesperson estimated the crowd size as "off the charts" and the vibe as electrifying.

Police reported a mostly peaceful gathering during the evening. However, a gathering protesting the military's presence at the festival attempted to breach the military tent. The military quickly thwarted the attempt. The protest, dubbed "A Hessentag Without the Military!", was organized by the Peaceful Hessentag Alliance, backed by the Left Party in Hesse. A whooping 550 participants participated at the event's peak.

The focus of the day was on celebrating the tireless efforts of Hessian volunteers. Hessian Minister President Boris Rhine and Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) united to honor the essential contributions made by an estimated 80,000 volunteer helpers in Hesse's fire and disaster protection services.

Honoring Selfless Heroes

Volunteers are the backbone of this community, Rhine confessed. They drop everything and rush to aid when the alarm bell tolls, sometimes diving headlong into perilous situations to save others. Whether it's fires, floods, or medical emergencies, their tireless dedication is priceless to our nation.

Poseck stressed that every deployment, exercise, and on-call are the responsibilities of the volunteers. These individuals perform their roles not only professionally but with utmost dedication, even if it means juggling demanding jobs and family lives. In the face of growing demands, such as heavy rain, forest fires, or power outages, the strength of fire and disaster protection services becomes paramount for our safety.

Poseck visited the Hessentag watch and command center, where he was introduced to the festival-exclusive app, designed to facilitate smooth communication among the police force. The app was initially developed in response to the 2024 European Championship, Poseck noted. It streamlines deployment documents and information for officers, so they can focus on their responsibilities. "The app simplifies work, tightens communication chains, and showcases that we're moving forward with technology."

As the sun sets, festival-goers can groove to a set by rapper Ski Aggu. On Sunday, police recruits will take their oath as part of the "Day of the Police," a tradition usually held at the Stadtwerke-Arena, but relocated to the VILCO Stadthalle Bad Vilbel due to a weather alert. The Swedish rock band Mando Diao will also perform during the weekender.

Over the course of seven days, an estimated 750,000 visitors are expected in the Wetterau district, surpassing last year's Hessentag in Fritzlar, which drew in 519,000 attendees. Prepare for a diverse and vibrant weekender, bursting with over 1,600 events, from captivating concerts by internationally famed artists, theatre, comedy, sports events, parties, and interactive activities by clubs and groups.
