City of Pentecost resounds with a new audio phenomenon - City bells ring out in metropolis during Pentecost, introducing a novel melodious tone.
Wanna check out a unique audio experience in Frankfurt? You gotta hear the Grand City Chimes! Every year on the eve of major religious holidays, a spectacular coordination takes place — the eve of the first Advent, Christmas Eve, the Saturday before Easter Sunday, and now, the Saturday before Pentecost. This year, though, it's gonna be a little different.
On the 10th chillest churches in the city center, including the Paulskirche and the Katharinenkirche at Hauptwache, will give off their heavenly chimes. Not to mention the Imperial Cathedral's nine bells, including the city's biggest and most famous, the Gloriosa, which weighs a whopping 12,000 kilograms!
Frankfurt's got culture, alright!
Now, here's where things are getting groovy. The new version of the Grand City Chimes is by some badass musicians from the international Ensemble Modern. They're gonna make the experience more immersive as hell! And get this — it's happening this Saturday, from 4:30 to 5:00 PM.
Doesn't that sound cool? Sweet tunes from Frankfurt's downtown churches during Pentecost! The awesome part is, they're gonna replay that arrangement annually before Pentecost forevermore. They call it "supra urbem" ("above the city"). On other dates, the classic version, crafted by Mainzer bell expert Paul Smets back in the '50s, will still be ringing.
Initially, each bell will make its own solo, from the highest to the lowest notes. After about 15 minutes, they'll all join together to form the familiar, majestic sound that envelops the city center.
The Grand City Chimes tradition dates back to 1856, with the honorable title added later.
