City of Saarlouis Honored with Fairtrade Designation Once More
In the heart of Saarland, the city of Saarlouis continues to lead the way in promoting fair production conditions and sustainable consumption. The journey began in 2009 when the city council initiated an engagement towards this cause.
Fast forward to 2011, Saarlouis was officially designated as a Fairtrade Town, making it one of the first municipalities in the region to join this international movement. Since then, the city has been a part of over 900 Fairtrade Towns in Germany, contributing to a network of over 2,000 cities in 36 countries worldwide.
The Fairtrade status has significantly increased awareness and support for fair trade products within the community. Residents are encouraged to opt for ethically sourced goods, thereby supporting producers in developing countries who receive fair prices and better working conditions.
This commitment to fair trade has had a profound impact on Saarlouis. It has strengthened the local commitment to global social justice and solidarity by educating citizens and businesses about fair trade principles. The city's economy has also benefited, attracting consumers interested in ethically sourced products.
Moreover, Saarlouis's Fairtrade commitment encourages sustainable trade practices that contribute to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods for farmers and workers in the global South. This has likely resulted in the development of a network of shops, cafes, schools, and organizations that participate in promoting Fairtrade products and values, embedding these principles into local culture and economy.
Mayor Marc Speicher, who was involved in the initial Fair Trade Town commitment in the city council, emphasizes the city's role in addressing global poverty. He praises the strong involvement of citizens in fair trade, a testament to the city's goal of enabling fair working and living conditions for producers in the global South.
The city's dedication to this cause is evident in its continued efforts. A steering group consisting of representatives from the city administration, churches, schools, and local businesses was established to implement Fairtrade measures. This group coordinates local measures and ensures long-term maintenance of standards.
Recently, Saarlouis's Fairtrade status has been extended for another two years in the current evaluation round. The city, though small in size, believes in making a personal contribution to fair trade and sustainable consumption. It asserts that every individual and even a small city can contribute to fair trade and sustainable consumption, even if they cannot change the whole world.

In Saarlouis's focus on promoting fair trade, the city has extended its commitment beyond products to include home-and-garden items, encouraging residents to embrace a sustainable-living lifestyle. Meanwhile, the city's Fairtrade measures have also influenced local businesses, resulting in a network of shops and cafes that sell Fairtrade certified goods, further embedding fair trade principles into the city's culture and economy.
