Gotta Love Autumn Plantin'

Hey there, budding planter! Yeah, I know the fall is typically when gardening season starts to wind down, but there's some real benefits to planting trees during this season, not the frigid springtime. Here's the lowdown on why you should be grabbin' a shovel and getting down to rootin' in autumn!

Plot Your Plants

Before we dive into the world of rooty adventure, it's essential to pick the perfect spot for your tree. Consider the sun, soil composition, water sources, and the tree's mature size. And hey, don't forget to call 811 before diggin' up the yard - you don't wanna hit any power lines!

Find Your Trees

Autumn isn't the prime time for wide selections at the local nursery, but there are still some quality stock to be found. Remember the old saying, "good things come to those who wait"? Well, it applies to plantin' trees too! If you can't snag the exact variety you're eyein', consider plantin' a few different ones this autumn and then plant the rest in the spring.

Dig a Hole

Once you've chosen your tree and the right spot for it, it's time to dig a hole that's approximately twice as wide as your root ball's diameter and the same depth. If you've got some clay soil, go ahead and score the sides of the hole first to make it easier for the roots to bed down.

Add Some Compost

Want to boom the growth of your new tree? Add some compost to the hole before readyin' it for the roots. This will provide a nutrient-rich environment for your tree to succeed in.

Plant That Bad Boy

Now that everything's all set up, gently lower your tree into the hole, positionin' the roots so they're spread outward, not circle-dancin'. Once it's centered, fill in the hole with the original soil you dug out, water it down to help settle things in, and don't forget to mulch your tree!

Mulch Your Way to Success

Mulching your tree helps keep the moisture locked in and the soil warm, which is crucial for root growth. But remember, keep a few inches between the trunk and the mulch to prevent moisture buildup and potential harm to the tree.

What Trees Can You Plant in the Fall?

Not every tree works great with autumn plantin'. In general, trees with shallow, fibrous root systems are more successful during this season. But don't worry, we've got you covered! Some excellent choices for your fall plantin' include peaches, apples, persimmons, maples, buckeyes, crabapples, pines, and spruce. Happy plantin', folks!

In the spirit of embracing autumn, consider expanding your home-and-garden lifestyle by planning for some gardening endeavors. Autumn provides an optimal time to think about planting trees, as it offers less-crowded nurseries and cooler temperatures that are more favorable for tree root systems, such as maples, buckeyes, crabapples, pines, and spruce, to establish themselves.
