Development of Social Housing at Humboldt Forum Underway
The Berlin Senate has unveiled plans for a new residential quarter in the heart of the city, situated near the south side of the Humboldt Forum and Schlossplatz on Breite Straße. The project, which is being developed by the Mitte Housing Association (WBM), is set to include a mix of commercial premises, offices, and modern, affordable rental apartments.
The residential quarter will feature 65-70 apartments, with half of them offered at a social rent of 6.50 EUR. The other half will be available for a net cold rent of less than ten euros. This affordable housing will coexist with high-end owner-occupied apartments, such as 'Stadtresidenz am Schinkelplatz' and 'Kronprinzengärten', which will be in close proximity.
The design of the quarter will respect the historical significance of the location, aiming to blend seamlessly with the surrounding architecture. The project will also include ten commercial units reserved for cultural purposes.
The workshop procedure for the project will commence in August 2021 with an inaugural colloquium and a site inspection. The participating planning offices will present their interim results to a jury and interested citizens in a short video, with the public's comments being incorporated into the further project planning.
The already partially opened Humboldt Forum on Museum Island will serve as a prominent neighbour to the residential quarter. The construction of apartments, not usual suspects like the Unity Monument, U-Bahn station Museumsinsel, or the planned river bath in the Spree, is the focus of this real estate project.
The commercial areas and apartments in the project will have a combined gross floor area of 6,500 square meters. The 'House of One' project is being created not far from Breiten Straße, adding to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of the area.
The Berlin Senate has yet to announce the responsible realtor or architectural firm commissioned to realise the project, but the public is eagerly awaiting further updates on this exciting new development.
