Durham University Launches National Geothermal Centre for Sustainability Boost

Durham University has launched the National Geothermal Centre, aiming to boost research into geothermal energy. The centre, launched in 2021, is a collaboration between Durham, the Net Zero Technology Centre, SHIFT Geothermal, and Aberdeen City Council. This initiative aligns with the university's ambitious sustainability goals.

Durham University is committed to reducing its environmental impact. It aims to achieve net zero carbon footprint by 2035 and biodiversity net gain by 2032. The university's Botanic Garden, open to the public, hosts educational events and activities, promoting environmental awareness.

Durham's campus is a haven for wildlife. It includes diverse habitats like woodland, grassland, and wetland, supporting various species. The university has won platinum status in the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Awards and was a finalist in the Green Gown Awards for its sustainability initiatives. Durham is also internationally recognised for addressing environmental challenges, ranking 19th globally in QS Sustainability Rankings.

The university encourages visitors to explore its campus and discover its environmental spaces. It is currently rewilding some areas to encourage wildlife and reduce mowing. Meanwhile, an international team co-led by Durham is studying Greenland's ice sheet aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Durham University's commitment to sustainability is evident in its initiatives, from launching the National Geothermal Centre to rewilding its campus. Its efforts have been recognised internationally, and it continues to encourage visitors to appreciate and protect the environment.
