Embracing the Cozy and Comforting: A Spring Guide to Hygge
26 March 2021 | Hygge in Spring: Embracing Comfort and Joy
Bex Massey, founder of Bramble & Fox, shares her insights on hygge—a concept centered on finding solace and simple pleasures—and how to incorporate it into one's life during Spring.
Bex's introduction to hygge came from the book "The Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking, offering comfort in challenging times. Hygge, a Danish word loosely translated as "cosiness of the soul," she says, encapsulates a feeling of contentment and wellbeing. This feeling, she adds, can be experienced in various everyday moments, such as enjoying a warm beverage while watching a rainstorm or engaging in a creative hobby.
Hygge, despite associations with cold, dark seasons, transcends through Spring. Bex refutes common myths surrounding hygge, which deem it as seasonal or relegated to minimalist, neutral-colored homes. Instead, she advocates embracing color, creativity, and unique style in a hygge home.
To celebrate the arrival of spring, Bex offers several hygge tips geared towards enjoying the changing seasons and cultivating feelings of hope and contentment:
- Relax with morning tea outside or by the window, absorbing the budding greenery and signs of the season.
- Bring the outdoors indoors by arranging a collection of jars, bottles, and containers filled with pussy willow, cherry blossom, daffodils, and bluebells.
- Decorate your home or workspace with a Spring wreath, either on the door, mantel, dresser, or table centerpiece, and complete the arrangement with candles.
- Spring clean a neglected area or refresh your room layout, aiming to create a fresh, rejuvenating ambiance.
- Gather loved ones, warm blankets, hot chocolate, and venture out into the fresh spring air for a relaxing star-gazing session in the garden or local park.
- Seize the opportunity to plant a herb garden on your window ledge or participate in community allotments, channeling the spirit of intention, growth, and renewal.
