Enjoying the Easter Spirit in Our Cozy Cabin!
Glad Påsk! (Happy Easter!) It's time to switch gears from charming Swedish homes adorned with Easter decorations and delve into a guide for a unique Easter getaway. This year, consider island hopping in the Baltic Sea for an unforgettable Easter weekend.
Let's begin our journey with Saaremaa, Estonia, a picturesque island known for its pristine beaches, traditional villages, and the well-preserved medieval fortress, Kuressaare Castle. The island also boasts natural attractions like the Kaali meteorite crater field. Saaremaa is a cultural hub, making it an excellent destination for a short island-hopping trip.
Next, we have Ruhnu Island, Estonia, a remote and quiet island in the Gulf of Riga. It offers long white sand beaches, grassy dunes, and minimal infrastructure, making it perfect for solitude and nature lovers. Ruhnu is accessible only by ferry or small plane, adding to its allure.
Moving on to Gotland, Sweden, east of Stockholm, this island is famous for its medieval town Visby with cobblestone streets, beaches, and lively summer activities. Gotland provides a mix of beach relaxation, historic sites, and vibrant local culture. Ferries connect Stockholm to Visby in about three hours, making it accessible for a weekend escape.
The Curonian Spit, Lithuania, is a 60-mile peninsula known for its natural beauty and shifting dunes with sleepy fishing villages. It's less resort-oriented and more about enjoying solitude and nature, especially around the town of Nida.
Pärnu, Estonia, is a seaside town with family-friendly, shallow sandy beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. It provides a convenient coastal stop for beachgoing and mild urban experiences.
While Helsinki and the Finnish archipelago could also be considered, they are less emphasized for island hopping specifically. However, they offer a blend of modern city experiences and nearby island escapes.
For those seeking a quieter retreat, Ruhnu and Curonian Spit might be the perfect choices, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On the other hand, Gotland and Saaremaa provide a richer blend of history and activity, ensuring an exciting Easter weekend.
These islands are accessible by ferry or small plane from nearby Baltic capitals, making them popular short trip destinations in the region. So, pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable Easter adventure in the Baltic Sea!
Before we wrap up, let's share one of the writer's favourite Easter recipes - a traditional Swedish Easter cake, Påskkakor. Stay tuned for the recipe in our next post!
