Beaches of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a popular tourist destination, are gearing up for a change. According to the state's tourism association, a wave of smokeless stretches on these sun-kissed beaches is on the horizon.
Alexander Stein, from the Göhren Tourism Administration, shares the pioneering strides of his coastal town. Since 2010, Göhren on Rügen has sported smoke-free zones on its shore, enjoying numerous benefits from the move.
"Families flocking with rented beach chairs appreciate the non-smoking areas the most," remarks Stein. Although no expansions are planned for the moment, the theme remains an emotional debate year after year.
Göhren paved the path
In 2009, a poll of holidaymakers in Göhren revealed the desire for smoke-free beach zones, accounting for 32% of responses. Subsequently, two sections were marked by banners reading "Smoking is not desired here," and ashtrays were distributed throughout the beach. Hence, Göhren became one of Germany's first localities to introduce non-smoking beach sections, according to Stein.
"When it comes to securing families with children, taking measures against smoking is a wise call," expresses Birgit Hesse, the president of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern tourism association. However, the implementation of smoke-free beaches in the state is inconsistent.
For instance, Binz Bay zones in five active beach areas and three large family beaches as smoke-free, according to Hesse. This, she explains, creates tranquil havens for athletes, families, and beachgoers who crave fresh sea air, exempt from cigarette smoke. Signage at beach entrances prominently displays the smoke-free zones, which are also present in Rostock.
However, beachgoers in Boltenhagen, Rerik, and Usedom can enjoy their cigarettes freely as there are no designated non-smoking areas. Instead, ashtrays are provided. In some communities, efforts to establish smoke-free beach zones have been abandoned, as seen in Koserow.
The French influence
The smoking ban in public areas of France may have rubbed off on Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In Prerow, discussions regarding smoke-free beach sections are slated for the next town council meeting.
"Each municipality assumes its own prerogative over the type of beach usage and ultimately the guests it intends to cater to within the municipal self-government," Hesse clarifies. She adds that issues pertaining to cigarette smoke on beaches remain uncommonly minor.
