Expanded Sundays Operating Hours at Dusseldorf's Central Library
Expanded Library Hours and Sunday Events at Düsseldorf Libraries
Starting from January 5, 2025, several libraries in Düsseldorf will be extending their operating hours on Sundays. This change is set to attract even more visitors, particularly on weekends, as the Central Library at Konrad Adenauer Platz (KAP1) will now be open from 11:00 to 18:00.
The Central Library, a popular destination for many Dusseldorfers, is expected to see an increase in footfall, with approximately 3,000 people visiting every Sunday. This trend is likely to be mirrored at the branches in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach, which are now open on Sundays as well.
The libraries in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach will operate from 13:00 to 18:00 (Bilk), 11:00 to 18:00 (Eller and Central Library at KAP1), and 11:00 to 18:00 (Unterbach) respectively. It's worth noting that access to the Unterbach library on Sundays is granted via the library card.
Security personnel will be present during opening hours at KAP1, Bilk, and Eller libraries, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all visitors. At the Hochschulbibliothek der Hochschule Düsseldorf, Sunday hours extend from 11:00 to 22:00, making it the only other Düsseldorf public library with Sunday opening hours from that date.
Many working Dusseldorfers consider the Central Library their 'living room' in the city, a place to relax, read, and study. The extended hours will provide more opportunities for these visitors, as well as families with young children or young adults aged 15 to 25 using the libraries as a study space.
In addition to the extended hours, more Sunday events have been offered at the Central Library since fall 2024. It is likely that similar events may be introduced at the other libraries as well, further enhancing the library experience on weekends.
The Sunday opening of libraries has proven to be a successful model, allowing visitors to browse books, read magazines, or use other services in peace over the weekend. This initiative is set to make libraries more accessible and attractive to a wider audience, fostering a love for reading and learning in the city of Düsseldorf.
