After half a century, the enigmatic, eccentric wilderness of South America continues to captivate, mirroring Bruce Chatwin's groundbreaking, now-iconic book.

Exploring Patagonia: Another Expedition to Earth's Farthest Expanse

Hittin' Buenos Aires on the same day old Bruce Chatwin declared his South American escape plan 50 years ago was a coinkydink, but it worked for me. I didn't ditch a New York gig to discover the Patagonia secret, but an itinerary from Harry Hastings, the mastermind behind Plan South America, sure did the trick. I was after some adventure, geological wonders, hikes, cozy lodgings, and out-of-this-world views, and he delivered.

Chatwin was that dude who started modern-day Patagonia tourism, but it's eco-activist Douglas Tompkins everyone's whispering about these days. He scooped up over two million acres of Patagonia and became the world's biggest private landowner, rewilding the region and creating national parks. The guy was a hero ’til he met the end in a kayaking accident in 2015.

I landed in Futaleufú, a lesser-known corner of Patagonia, where the Pata Lodge crew follows Tompkins' eco-experiment. They discovered this place as a picnic spot 13 years ago and transformed it into a fairytale eco-retreat. It buzzes with sustainability and, let's be honest, a dash of evangelism.

Next up was a Spot of White-water Rafting

I joined a gang of 40 river virgins for a wild ride in Futaleufú's rapids with the Bochinche crew. They're a bunch of global nomads who return each season before jetting off again. The guides are charmers with a mix of hippie vibes and macho swag. We tackled some massive waves and swirly currents. It was a thrill I'll never forget, even if I did almost pee myself.

Melimoyu Lodge lies four hours away, through deserted mountain passes and forests reclaimed from ancient fires. Or, as the Chileans say, "despejados." I couldn't help feeling a bit claustrophobic in the foggy wilderness, but that didn't stop me enjoying some relaxed fishing on the banks of the lake named after a volcano.

The Patagonia Enigma

People are always trying to figure out where Patagonia begins and ends, but no one seems to know for sure. Nicholas Shakespeare, a British author, described it as a "vast, vague territory" covering 900,000 square kilometers, best characterized by its soil.

The region gained fame from Chatwin's "In Patagonia," establishing him as the embodiment of the consummate adventurer. Now, generations are taking off in search of their own escapades, inspired by the daring Brit. And I ain't gonna lie, I'm right there with 'em.

So I stuck to my plan, movin' south through Coyhaique, with its live music joints and casino, all the way to experiences that pushed my boundaries. From white-water rafting in Futaleufú to fishin' in Melimoyu, I felt the magic of Patagonia unfolding before me. It's a vast, wild land that stirs up deep emotions and leaves you questioning yourself.

But as they say in Patagonia, "en desertos y en tormentas" – in deserts and in storms, your character will be tested. And I can confirm, the isolation does make you think. I found myself wanting a corner shop or a cinema, but there ain't many places like that in this part of the world.

Embrace the Wild, All ye Free Spirits!

Modern-day Patagonia is for those who yearn for adventure, those who crave the raw beauty of nature, and those who seek to reconnect with themselves. The region still holds an allure, much like it did for Chatwin, Tompkins, and the countless travelers who've followed in their footsteps.

So, heed the call of the wild and set off on your own Patagonian odyssey. Just remember, this vast, mysterious land has a funny way of making your soul dance and your spirits soar. And who knows? You might just find yourself too.
