Exploring the Great Outdoors Made Simple
Get ready for an exciting adventure as Get Outdoors Week 2021 approaches! This event, supported by Recreation Aotearoa, encourages everyone to embrace the great outdoors and experience the unique tramping and walking culture of Aotearoa.
To make your outdoor adventures safer and more enjoyable, the NZ Mountain Safety Council Incorporated has developed a brand-new trip planning app called Plan My Walk. This app, available for download from preferred app stores and online at www.planmywalk.nz, offers a wealth of features designed to support and enhance the tramping and walking culture in Aotearoa.
The Plan My Walk app currently boasts over 1000 tracks, each with essential information to help users build a solid trip plan. The app includes MetService weather, track alerts, user's trip reviews, and a customisable gear list. Users can also add their own trip notes, daily schedules, and documents to share with friends and emergency contacts.
But that's not all! During Get Outdoors Week 2021, users can enter a draw to win a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) by snapping a photo of themselves on a track chosen from Plan My Walk and using the hashtag #GOWeekNZ.
The analysis of incident data from 2012 to 2019 found that 'unprepared for the weather conditions', 'lack of warm layered clothing and/or a waterproof jacket', and 'an overambitious choice of route, lack of sufficient fitness and taking longer than expected to reach the destination' were the leading causes of tramping-related search and rescues (SAR). The Plan My Walk app aims to encourage thorough trip planning and preparation to reduce incidents and accidents in outdoor activities.
So, what are you waiting for? Get outdoors, plan your walk with the Plan My Walk app, and be in the running to win a PLB. Let's make this Get Outdoors Week 2021 a safe and memorable one!
