Discovering Street Art in Duisburg: A Free Guided Tour

On September 20th, the city of Duisburg will become an open-air gallery as part of the 'Urban History Outdoors' event series. The main attraction of the day will be a guided tour focused on Street Art, starting at 3 pm at the Werthmann-Kugel on Kuhlenwall.

This tour, organized by residents of Mercator and Duisburg City Archives, promises to be an engaging exploration of the city center's Street Art. Ferdinand Leuxner will lead the tour, sharing the stories behind the markings on house walls, streetlights, and power boxes.

The tour will showcase a variety of graffiti, tags, and stickers, each representing expressions of urban culture and social messages. Some of the artists featured include local graffiti and street art creators, whose works reflect and engage with the city's urban history and contemporary social issues.

One such iconic figure that might be encountered during the tour is Kilroy, a legendary graffiti figure from World War II. Kilroy, often represented as a cartoonish face peeking over a wall, symbolizes presence and marking locations. In this context, it may serve to connect past urban markings with current street art.

So, if you're interested in urban history, art, or simply want to discover a new side of Duisburg, mark your calendars for September 20th. The tour is free, making it an accessible way to immerse yourself in the vibrant Street Art scene of Duisburg. Join us for an enlightening journey through the city's streets, turning them into a living gallery.
