Hagenbeck Zoo Introduces Expansive New Habitat for Tapir-Capybara Duo

Hamburg, Germany - Hagenbeck Zoo has unveiled an innovative 1,000 square meter enclosure for lowland tapirs and capybaras, significantly enlarging the living space for these semi-aquatic animals.

The duo, consisting of male capybara Ramon and female lowland tapir Yamari, were recently moved and given a warm welcome to their new home. Following a quick bath and a second breakfast, the animals took their time exploring and familiarizing themselves with the new environment.

Both species come from the Amazon and share similar habitat requirements, which have been carefully addressed in the enclosure's design. According to veterinarian Michael Flügger, the spacious setting is intended to enable the animals to roam freely and engage in natural behaviors.

Ramon, a capybara with insatiable appetite, and Yamari, the tapir, primarily feed on vegetables, fruit, and grass. To ensure an abundant and balanced diet, the keepers will monitor the food supply closely, especially for Yamari, as capybaras tend to consume food rapidly.

The new enclosure boasts water features such as ponds or pools, essential for the animals' comfort and well-being, given that both species are semi-aquatic. Sheltered areas and lush vegetation are also included, providing shade and protection from the elements for the animals' health and stress levels.

Further additions to the enclosure have not been announced, although Hagenbeck Zoo's commitment to animal welfare and conservation indicates that any future developments will prioritize these values.

In related news, tapir newcomer Teodor is expected to join the resident duo in a few days.

The enclosure's design incorporates elements essential for the well-being and natural behaviors of its inhabitants, including Ramon the capybara and Yamari the lowland tapir.
