Historic Killyon Church Wins RIAI Award for Modern Refurbishment

Killyon Church, a historic place of worship in Enfield, Co. Meath, has received national recognition for its refurbishment. The church won in the Conservation category at the RIAI Awards 2019, transforming into a modern space with a warmer and more intimate feel.

PG Architects, led by Patrick Gilsenan, carried out the redesign in 2016. The project addressed several issues, including a leaking copper roof and heating problems. The building size was reduced, and the seating arrangement was centered around the altar. New contemporary finishes were added, respecting the original design. The heating system was updated to an efficient gas condensing boiler, and the roof was replaced with a warm, insulated natural zinc roof.

Killyon Church's refurbishment has been praised for its sensitive approach to preserving the building's character while creating a modern place of worship. The RIAI Award recognizes the project's success in balancing historic preservation with contemporary design.
