Horses create a wave at the centennial Chincoteague Pony Swim event in Virginia.

This year, the 100th Chincoteague Pony Swim, a cherished tradition in Virginia, was marked by heightened security measures. The decision was prompted by a credible online threat against the event, making it the first time such measures have been necessary for the Pony Swim.

The threat, confirmed by local authorities and the mayor in January 2025, was deemed unprecedented for this event and was investigated as credible. The security measures implemented included banning coolers, umbrellas, glass containers, and bags or backpacks that are not clear plastic or vinyl. Visitors were encouraged to arrive early as all items were subject to security screening and searches.

The threat reportedly was linked to a possible list of targets circulated by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). To ensure safety, attendees were restricted to carrying only clear vinyl/plastic bags or small clutch purses under specified dimensions; all bags would be inspected.

Organisers anticipated a record crowd of up to 50,000, necessitating thorough safety precautions. The heightened security aimed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors during the week-long centennial festivities culminating in the pony swim, auctions, and return swim events.

The iconic event, which captivated onlookers as the ponies swam across the Assateague Channel, drew thousands of spectators. The remaining swim of the ponies to Assateague Island will take place on Friday, followed by the auction on Thursday at Chincoteague Island. After the auctions, the remaining ponies will swim back to Assateague Island.

It is important to note that the Chincoteague Pony Swim and related events do not take place at Six Flags America, which has cancelled 'Fright Fest' and is closing for the fall season. The events are held in Virginia, where the Chincoteague Pony Swim has been a beloved tradition for over a century.

These stronger security protocols are in response to credible threats and large expected attendance for this landmark 100th celebration, underscoring the event's importance and commitment to public safety. Despite the increased security, the Pony Swim was completed in approximately 44 seconds, marking another successful year for this cherished tradition.
