Ideas are under production in the current development stage!
In the heart of Neuwied, a vibrant transformation is underway. Here's a roundup of the latest developments:
Construction Progress
The first phase of construction on Schlossstraße has been completed, with the entire new street expected to be finished by spring. The historic town hall is also undergoing renovation, with street paving on Pfarrstraße set to be renewed starting in October, and work on the building itself scheduled for 2026. The roof renovation will be more comprehensive than initially planned.
Renovated Town Hall and Amenities
Despite financial constraints, the renovated historic town hall will not feature a restaurant. However, the museum within will boast a publicly accessible gastronomic area.
City Development Tour and Public Engagement
Mayor Jan Einig, along with the city marketing department, organised a "development tour" through the city centre for residents, demonstrating their commitment to transparency and public engagement.
Leadership and Expertise
Thorsten Kausch, formerly overseeing marketing and tourism for the city of Hamburg, has been accompanying Neuwied for two years in the development of its city centre. His expertise is a valuable asset in steering the city's redevelopment.
Citizen Involvement
Over 1500 people participated in an online survey regarding inner-city development, underscoring the public's interest in the city's transformation.
Green Spaces and Events
The redesigned market square is now greener and more usable as an event space. The Goetheanlagen, a newly redesigned area in the city centre, has become popular with families and hosts events like the Rhein-Chillen. Future plans include a toilet facility and the Deichuferpromenade extension.
Infrastructure Improvements
The Engerser Straße, one of the last major construction sites in the city centre, is being made more bike-friendly. The new water feature at Luisenplatz is almost complete and will liven up the central square. It can be turned off and built over for large events.
Attractions and Amenities
The Deichuferpromenade, a renovated and redesigned promenade, is popular in the summer and features cozily lit Deich walls, popular "Duscher" figures, and a reduced pigeon problem. A multi-million euro funding commitment has been secured for the renovation and reattraction of the Deich crown. Renovation work is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
Transportation and Accessibility
The new citizen bus service has over 100 registered passengers and is well-utilized, with 130 trips booked in July alone. A hotel ship is expected to dock in Neuwied for the first time this year, and work on a pier for daily shipping continues.
Mayor Jan Einig states that the city has a plan and is on the right track, working together with the people of the city. Thorsten Kausch emphasises the importance of the city centre's development for the overall health of the city. With these developments, Neuwied's city centre is poised for a bright future.
