Nieuwied, a charming city nestled along the Rhine, is undergoing a significant transformation. From the arrival of a hotel ship to the renovation of iconic landmarks, the city is buzzing with activity.
For the first time this year, a hotel ship will dock in Nieuwied, and work on a daily cruise ship pier is ongoing. This addition promises to bring a unique flair to the city's riverside.
The city marketing, spearheaded by Mayor Peter Jung, has already breathed life into the market square with various initiatives. The after-work market, city reading event, and the return of the double-decker café bus are just a few examples.
The citizen bus service, regularly used by nearly 100 passengers, has been well-utilized. In July alone, a total of 130 trips were booked, demonstrating the service's importance in the community.
The city center is visibly changing, with projects already implemented and plans taking shape in the coming months. The Deichuferpromenade, completely renovated and redesigned, is now a popular summer spot, featuring a cozily lit Deich wall, popular 'Duscher' figures, and a noticeable reduction in the pigeon problem.
The new water feature at Luisenplatz, nearing completion, will enhance the central square's atmosphere, especially in the summer, with illuminated, differently high-spraying fountains.
The market square, a significant project in the city redesign, will become greener without becoming a park, allowing it to still serve as an event space.
The Engerser Straße, one of the last major construction sites in the city center, aims to regulate traffic and make the street more bike-friendly.
The Historical Town Hall will undergo renovation, with street paving on Pfarrstraße being renewed from October, and work on the building itself starting in 2026. The roof renovation will be more comprehensive than initially planned.
Around 1500 people participated in an online survey regarding the city center development, underscoring a significant response. The planted trees in the market square will grow and provide more shade over the years.
The first construction phase of Schloßstraße is complete, allowing visitors to see the new design. The section in front of the castle is nearing completion, with the new street expected to be fully finished in the spring.
The Goetheanlagen, the first project in the comprehensive redesign of the city center, is popular with families and hosts events like the Rhein-Chillen. A toilet facility and the Deichuferpromenade extension towards the bridge are upcoming.
A multi-million euro grant has been secured for the renovation of the Deich crown. The renovation and re-attractiveness are underway, with the actual renovation work expected to begin by the end of 2026.
Thorsten Kausch, who previously oversaw marketing and tourism for the city of Hamburg, approves of the development of Nieuwied's city center. The city marketing department, under Mayor Jan Einig, has organized a 'development tour' for residents to see the changes in the city center. Kausch emphasized the importance of tackling inner-city development and facing citizen's critical reflection.
As Nieuwied continues to evolve, it's clear that the city is committed to creating a vibrant, modern, and welcoming environment for its residents and visitors alike.
