Lake Lydiard Estate Captured in Photographs
In the picturesque town of Bellaire, Michigan, Dawn and Gary Goldman embarked on a two-year journey to transform a 1905 Victorian mansion, breathing new life into a century-old home while preserving its historic charm.
The Goldmans painstakingly restored original features such as solid-oak pocket doors, the grand staircase, original flooring, windows, doors, trim, fireplaces, and even a back staircase. They handled complex trim work, measuring, sorting, and reinstalling it to preserve the home's historic character.
Modern updates include a fully new kitchen with white oak cabinetry, boldly veined marble countertops, and high-end appliances. A large, bilevel island with integrated seating replaced several smaller ones, providing a modern yet homely feel. The primary suite features a walk-in closet and private bath, while a secondary bedroom boasts an ensuite. The home's mechanical systems, including plumbing, electrical, roofing, and HVAC, were completely overhauled for comfort and efficiency.
The brick patio now tops a steel and cedar trellis, creating an inviting outdoor space. Multicoloured subway tiles and fluted glass are featured in the wet bar, adding a touch of modernity to the vintage charm. Terrazzo tiles add a modern twist to the herringbone wood floorboards, blending the old with the new.
Doors and windows have been expanded for better views of the idyllic lake. A curving central staircase now serves as a focal point in the foyer and living room, while a minimalist plaster fireplace in the living room replaced a 1990s brick version. In one of the bedrooms, a chic vintage fireplace has been included, maintaining the home's historical character.
The dining room is adjacent to an atrium with desert plants, offering a unique dining experience. A serene study offers views of the landscape, providing a peaceful retreat.
The Goldmans' renovation project has been commended by the Bellaire Historical Society for its careful preservation of the home's historic features and successful integration of modern elements. Their efforts have resulted in a "new house with old features," offering a perfect blend of preservation and modern livability.
