Learning Road Safety in Bendorf: Promoting Vehicle Usage, Cycling, and Inclusion

On a sunny day in July, the schoolyard of the Theodor-Heuss-Schule in Bendorf was transformed into a cycling training ground, as an event promoting road safety took place. Organised by the Bendorf Social Welfare Office, Volkshochschule (VHS), and the Bendorf Police Inspectorate, the event aimed to enhance mobility, foster cycling experiences, and encourage integration for individuals who had recently arrived in Germany and had little experience cycling in German traffic.

The event, with the motto "Enhance Mobility, Experience Cycling, Encounter Integration", was targeted at those who feel insecure in traffic due to a long break or lack of experience with German traffic rules. Participants enthusiastically engaged in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the day.

Nicole Heinrich, traffic safety advisor of the Bendorf Police Inspectorate, provided a comprehensive theoretical introduction about traffic rules for cyclists. The theoretical part included discussions about typical everyday situations and hazards on the road. A small test was given to participants to check their knowledge about proper behaviour on the road.

Following the theoretical session, participants were able to practice what they learned during practical exercises on the schoolyard. The cycling course was set up at the schoolyard, where participants could put their newfound knowledge into practice.

Many participants expressed feeling significantly safer on the road after the event. After the event, participants felt more confident and independent in their daily lives, with the event contributing to greater mobility for them. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

The event also aimed to promote inclusion for individuals who had recently arrived in Germany and had little experience cycling in German traffic. By providing a safe and supportive environment to learn, the event helped to break down barriers and encourage integration.

Overall, the road safety event in Bendorf proved to be a success, empowering new cyclists and promoting safer roads for all. For those interested in similar events, it is recommended to check official announcements from the Bendorf Social Welfare Office, the local VHS, or Bendorf Police press releases or websites, as they usually publish event summaries and outcomes.

In their home-and-garden lives, participants gained more independence and confidence due to the event's practical exercises that enhanced their cycling skills, contributing to a healthier lifestyle and safer transportation for all. By collaborating with the Volkshochschule (VHS), the Bendorf Social Welfare Office, and the Bendorf Police Inspectorate, the event also focused on lifestyle improvements and home-and-garden integration for newcomers to Germany.
