Creating a Marimekko-Inspired Pool Noodle Wreath

In a fun and affordable DIY project, you can transform a pool noodle into a vibrant and colourful wreath that pays homage to the iconic Marimekko design. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you recreate this eye-catching wreath.

To start, gather your materials: a pool noodle (available at your local dollar store), different colours of felt, acrylic paints, Q-tips or sponges, a hot glue gun and glue sticks, scissors, a pen or pencil, cardboard, toothpicks, ribbon or fabric for hanging, and optional washi tape.

First, let's create the Marimekko-inspired flowers. Paint each segment of the pool noodle with bold colours typical of Marimekko, such as red, white, black, and yellow. Use a Q-tip or sponge to add rounded petal shapes and contrasting centers, mimicking Marimekko's style of flat, graphic flowers with minimal detail. You can also create flowers out of felt by drawing and cutting them out before hot gluing them to the pool noodle segments.

To add extra structure to the felt flowers, cut small pieces of cardboard smaller than a flower and hot glue them to the back. For certain flowers, make a heap of hot glue and use it to attach a toothpick to the wreath. To attach the flowers to the wreath, you can use both hot glue and toothpicks. Overlap the flowers for more dimension on the wreath.

Once you've assembled your flowers, it's time to create the wreath base. Bend and tape the pool noodle into the desired shape, avoiding the need to cut it. If you prefer, you can use washi tape to hold the wreath together due to its lightweight nature.

Finally, arrange and attach the flowers to the wreath base. Create a loop with ribbon or fabric to hang the wreath. The entire project, including materials, will cost approximately $2.
