Meta Introduces Smart Spectacles with Advanced Technology; AI Management Delegated to Another Entity
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently showcased its latest innovation - the Meta Ray-Bans Gen 2. These smart glasses come equipped with a neural wristband for hand gestures, boast twice the battery life, and feature improved cameras.
During the event, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and artist Diplo demonstrated the sporty Oakley Vanguard smart glasses. The demonstration also featured a live AI system, which instructed Chef Cuso to add ingredients to a base mixture he hadn't made yet.
However, the event was not without its hiccups. There were three live demo fails, including one for integrated WhatsApp calls and one for AI-powered live translations.
Despite these setbacks, the event highlighted the difference between hardware and software quality, and the potential for improving software to give Meta an edge over competitors like OpenAI and Google. Zuckerberg believes that not using smart glasses in the future may lead to a "significant cognitive disadvantage."
As AI gets added to smart glasses' software, there is an increasing likelihood that AI will be used without a laptop or phone, primarily through smart glasses. This shift towards AI integration is part of Meta's strategy to move away from its open-source-focused origins and towards "taking superintelligence seriously."
Meta has recently spent billions of dollars to poach top AI scientists from other tech companies. However, it's worth noting that Meta's AI, as demonstrated during the event, is not yet at the level of "superintelligence" or even "intelligence" as intended by Zuckerberg.
The AI hardware market is still in its infancy, with devices like the Rabbit R1 and Humane's Friend pendant not becoming staples in daily life. Google, on the other hand, seems to be focusing on partnerships, such as with Samsung and Xreal.
OpenAI does not have imminent plans to release a standalone device, and Meta has not yet indicated that it will open up the AI in its hardware to other AI companies. More details about Meta's announcements can be found at Meta Connect 2025.
European regulators have criticised walled-garden approaches taken by other tech companies, and it remains to be seen how this will impact Meta's AI strategy. Having more choices for AI in smart glasses could make purchasing an expensive device more appealing, but the path to widespread adoption is still uncertain.
