Methods for Disabling a Security Device - Unlock a Theft-Preventative Tag

Security tags serve a vital role in preventing theft and unauthorized removal of merchandise. However, knowing how to remove these tags safely and correctly is equally important to prevent damage to newly purchased items.

Understanding the Different Types of Security Tags

Security systems in stores typically consist of two primary components: the security tag and an antenna system installed at store exits. Understanding the different types of security tags and their attachment methods is essential for safely and correctly removing them.

Magnetic Security Tags

These tags are common on clothing and have an internal spring-loaded pin held by a strong magnet. To remove them, use a strong rare earth magnet (much stronger than a fridge magnet). Lay the clothing flat, place the magnet on the side opposite the tag's locking mechanism (usually a dome or flat cap), and hold firmly. Gently pull the tag halves apart; the magnet will release the internal pin. You may need to adjust the magnet or apply a little pressure patiently until you hear a click and the tag opens.

The Two-Fork Method

For tags without easy magnet access, you can use two forks to pry the tag open. Wedge two forks between the security tag and the fabric, slowly and carefully pry and wiggle the tag to loosen it without damaging the clothing. This method requires patience and gentle force to avoid tearing the item.

Safety First

While these methods are popular "at-home" techniques, it's safest to return to the store for professional removal. Unauthorized removal of security tags could potentially damage the item or trigger ink packs embedded in some tags.

Types of Security Tags and Their Functionality

  • Radio-Frequency (RF) tags utilize low-frequency radio waves between the tag and receiver antenna.
  • Acousto-Magnetic (AM) tags use a transmitter to create a surveillance area where tag signals can be detected.
  • Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) Labels are small stickers that blend into packaging designs and can prevent theft when taken past sensors at store exits.
  • Bottle Locks are designed for liquor bottles and prevent opening until properly unlocked by store personnel.
  • Ink-Dye tags release permanent ink if forcibly removed and do not set off alarms.
  • Hard Tags are attached using metal pins that pierce through item fabrics.
  • Spider Wraps are used for larger boxed items like electronics and appliances, and tighten when tampered with, potentially triggering an alarm.

In summary, identify your tag type first and then:

  1. Use a strong magnet on magnetic tags, or
  2. Employ the two-fork prying technique on other styles, carefully and slowly.

Always prioritise safety when removing security tags to ensure your newly purchased items remain in pristine condition.

When dealing with magnetic security tags, it's crucial to use a strong rare earth magnet, positioning it on the side opposite the tag's locking mechanism, and gently pulling the tag halves apart to release the internal pin safely. For tags that aren't magnetic, the two-fork method can be employed by wedging the forks between the security tag and the fabric, prying and wiggling the tag to loosen it without damaging the clothing.
