Redesigned Aquarium Tour at Stralsund Sea Museum Opens Its Doors
New Ocean Museum unveils fresh underwater pathway, featuring 31 tanks - New Aquarium Tour Debuts at the Maritime Museum, Featuring 31 Basins for Visitor Enjoyment
Stepping into the revamped aquarium experience at the Stralsund Sea Museum is now a reality, as two classes of students, alongside Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD), were the first to lay eyes on the new blue-spotted rays, sea turtles, and more intriguing marine life.
Swimming through the expansive "Caribbean Reef" tank, a team of divers warmly welcomed guests, including Schwesig, as they looked on through a massive 80-square-meter glass pane.
This tank's grandeur comes from an eight-meter-tall glass pane hailing from Japan, showcasing artificial corals on display across three gallery levels. Crafted half a meter thick, the colossal slabs of glass house the 800,000 liters of water within the tank.
The aquarium tour now boasts no less than 30 striking new tanks and one well-renovated exhibit, offering captivating glimpses of the underwater landscapes that lie off the shores of Fiji Islands, Australia, and California. Brilliant anemones and California horn sharks traverse the kelp forests of the latter, while the cooler waters mirroring the Pacific valley provide a refreshing touch. In the Hawaii exhibits, tropical marine life flourishes at a balmy 25 degrees Celsius.
A blend of vibrant white sand and striking rock formations sets the scene for the "Fiji Islands" tank, where the museum's very own blue-spotted rays gracefully glide, thanks to their successful breeding program. The tour concludes with our long-term residents, the cherished sea turtles, Frieda, Käthe, and Naila, who have graced the museum for decades.
Having recently returned to their original location after spending several years in tanks at the Ozeaneum, another facility operated by the German Sea Museum, these enchanting creatures and many others have made their comeback.
Local and national governments have contributed to the project's massive funding, estimated in millions of euros. Following the filling of the tanks with 1.4 million liters of water seasoned with 45 tons of sea salt, a grand celebration is planned for September. Minister President Schwesig highlighted the Sea Museum as a significant tourist attraction and a cultural magnet for visitors.
- The Commission, in light of the recent developments at the Stralsund Sea Museum, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers involved in the installation and maintenance of the large aquarium tanks, particularly those exposed to ionizing radiation from the artificial corals.
- In addition to the impressive aquarium exhibits, the revamped Stralsund Sea Museum has added a home-and-garden section to highlight the lifestyle of marine species in their natural habitats, including the blue-spotted rays.
- Upon her visit to the Stralsund Sea Museum, Minister President Manuela Schwesig was struck by the precision of the measurements used in the installation of the massive 80-square-meter glass pane for the "Caribbean Reef" tank, discussing the exacting meters required for such a large structure.
- As a token of appreciation for the nearly 30-year partnership between Stralsund Sea Museum and the city, local authorities have gifted a small aquarium containing exotic tropical fish to the museum, aiming to provide an intimate, daily reminder of the bond shared between the museum and the city of Stralsund.
