New Ordinance Protects Hedgehogs from Lawn Mowers at Night

Hedgehogs, most active during twilight and night, face a significant threat from lawn mowers. Many are injured or killed by blades, prompting local authorities to introduce restrictions on lawn mowing times. A district has recently issued an ordinance to protect these nocturnal creatures.

Hedgehogs, due to their small size and slow movement, are particularly vulnerable to lawn mowers. Many local authorities have implemented restrictions on lawn mowing during nighttime hours to protect these animals. In Germany, for instance, the Lärmschutzverordnung regulates noise levels in residential areas, often prohibiting the use of loud equipment, including lawn mowers, between 10 pm and 6 am. However, specific regulations can vary by region.

To ensure hedgehog safety, garden owners should inspect their lawns for hiding spots before mowing. Providing safe retreat areas, such as wood piles or leaf heaps, can also encourage hedgehogs to take refuge. Additionally, boundary wires can be used to define the mowing area and protect hedgehogs from robot lawn mowers. The recent ordinance issued by the district prohibits nighttime lawn mower operation from 1 October 2025, aiming to prevent further decline in the hedgehog population.

Hedgehogs, driven by human influences, seek refuge in gardens and green spaces. To protect them, lawn mowers should be used during the day, ideally between 10 am and 4 pm. Local regulations may vary, so it's essential to check with local authorities for specific guidelines. The recent ordinance is a step towards preserving the hedgehog population, but individual garden owners also play a crucial role in their survival.
