Nightfall signals the arrival of Mathieu Grondin in Ottawa, who seeks to invigorate the city's vibe post-sunset
Ottawa Welcomes First Nightlife Commissioner: Mathieu Grondin
Mathieu Grondin, a seasoned veteran in the TV, film, and theatre industry, has taken on a new role as Ottawa's first Nightlife Commissioner. This appointment marks a significant step for the city's nightlife scene, as Grondin brings his extensive experience and passion to the position.
Grondin's mandate, adopted by City Council in 2023, is to implement Ottawa's Nightlife Economy Action Plan. To facilitate this, he has established an Ottawa Nightlife Office and created a platform for promoting events and projects, such as the Ottawa At Night website.
One of Grondin's key objectives is to extend the operating hours of bars and clubs in the city. This move is aimed at boosting the nightlife economy and creating a more vibrant and inclusive scene.
Grondin's background in the nightlife industry dates back to 2017 when he founded MTL 24/24, a non-profit organisation promoting and destigmatising nightlife in Montreal. In Montreal, he also established A Night Council, a consultation group for night owls, to discuss events and projects that could promote Quebec's nightlife and build a sense of community at night.
Grondin's role as Ottawa's Nightlife Commissioner involves working behind the scenes and serving as a liaison between city hall and stakeholders. He has already shown support for initiatives such as the Metcalfe Plaza project, a six-week pilot to bring music, culture, and food to an empty downtown lot. His office has also promoted events like the NCC'S BikeNight.
In his spare time, Grondin is a deejay and performs electronic music under the name Grondini. He currently resides in Gatineau.
It's worth noting that Grondin is the first person to hold this position in Canada. His appointment is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of a thriving nightlife scene for urban development and community engagement.
As Ottawa embarks on this new chapter in its nightlife story, Grondin's leadership and vision are poised to make a significant impact. The city looks forward to the exciting developments that lie ahead.
