Ring in the new year with a chilly dip! A polar plunge event took place in Nauthólsvík, Reykjavik, Iceland, on New Year's Eve, with over a hundred daredevils braving the icy waters.

Herdís Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, chairperson of SJÓR, the Reykjavík Sea Swimming Association, couldn't contain her excitement, stating, "We haven't been able to go to the sea together on New Year's Day since 2020, so it was extraordinarily uplifting."

This annual swim is unique, as participants splash into the cold waters donned in their fanciest attire to celebrate the new year. Don't be fooled, though, the real star of the show is the colder-than-usual water temperature.

In fact, Þorvaldsdóttir revealed that the conditions this year were quite unusual, with a record cold temperature of -2.2°C hitting in 2018, and the ice being unusually thick. However, she assured that the extreme cold didn't deter anyone from taking the plunge but emphasized the importance of taking precautions.

Despite the frigid waters, Þorvaldsdóttir herself stepped into the sea wearing a sequined gown to celebrate the new year. Many others also opted for their fanciest attire, with several groups boasting similar thematic styles. She admitted that the sequins certainly helped her cope with the cold.

Þorvaldsdóttir believes that commencing the year with a polar plunge is an invigorating way to set the tone for the year ahead. "The feeling of accomplishment you get when challenges the laws of nature is incredibly empowering. It prepares you to face any obstacles that may come your way," she explained.

As the crowd of participants exited the water, they were greeted with the warm, inviting embrace of nearby geothermal facilities, offering a stark contrast to the icy waters. The group's collective spirit and determination to face the cold head-on made for an unforgettable New Year's Day celebration!
