Nordhorn Puts Cyclists First: Redesigns Intersections, Expands Bike Paths
Nordhorn has prioritized cyclists in its urban planning, redesigning two intersections and expanding comfort hoodie paths. The city's 'Comfort Bike Paths' project, part of its bicycle traffic concept, has seen significant improvements for cyclists.
Two key intersections, Heseper Way and Frensdorferhaar, have been redesigned to give cyclists right-of-way. Drivers on Heseper Way must now slow down and yield to cyclists at the intersection. The Frensdorferhaar intersection has also been modified to prioritize cyclists.
The entire bike path along the Nordhorn-Almelo and connecting canals now has priority for cyclists. This seven-kilometer path has seen improvements, including the addition of a second lane last year to preserve old alley trees. The most frequently used section along the connecting canal benefited from this expansion.
Nordhorn's commitment to cycling infrastructure has been recognized nationally. In 2018, the city was nominated for the German Bicycle Prize for its 'Comfort Bike Paths' project and placed third. This project is part of Nordhorn's broader strategy to strengthen bicycle traffic.
Nordhorn's redesign of intersections and expansion of comfort hoodie paths demonstrate the city's commitment to promoting cycling. These changes, part of the 'Comfort Bike Paths' project, have improved safety and comfort for cyclists, earning the city national recognition.
