NortheasternExcursion Led by 2018 Study Tour Organizers
Peelham Farm, a 650-acre organic farm nestled in the Scottish borders, will be the highlight of this year's Pasture for Life (PFLA) two-day study tour for grassland farming. The tour, scheduled for June 6 and 7, will offer a unique opportunity for farmers to learn, share knowledge, and explore new ideas about sustainable farming practices.
The tour kicks off at Thistleyhaugh Farm near Morpeth in Northumberland on the first day. The Nelless family, who run a 1300-acre organic mixed enterprise farm in the Coquet valley, will be the hosts for the day.
On the second day, the tour will venture to Peelham Farm. Chris and Denise Walton, along with their son Angus and daughter-in-law Helen, and their dedicated team, run this farm. Peelham Farm supplies produce directly to consumers, restaurants, hotels, delicatessens, and independent, ethical retailers.
The visit to Peelham Farm will provide insights into breeding programmes for the development of pasture-fed genetics and marketing of Pasture for Life produce. Attendees will also get a chance to witness Peelham Farm's diverse livestock, including Aberdeen Angus x Luing cattle, Lleyn x Texel sheep, and free-range pigs.
Peelham Farm is also home to an on-farm butchery, smoker, and charcuterie facility. Those interested in the tour can book a place now, with places limited to 30 and allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.
In addition to the farm tour, there will be a presentation from Gillian Butler of Newcastle University about milk and meat quality from pasture-fed cattle. An optional dinner with the PFLA team is also available at Gasparro's Italian in Berwick-upon-Tweed on the Wednesday evening.
PFLA members receive a discount on ticket prices for the study tour. The PFLA study tours are a valuable resource for farmers, offering a platform to learn from each other and stay updated on the latest grassland farming practices.
