"Open-Air Bathing in Dresden Elicits Empathy": Outdoor Bathing Venues in Dresden

In the heart of Dresden, the city's public baths have been a popular summer destination for residents and tourists alike. Despite a lower-than-expected number of visitors this summer season, the baths are still considered a success by their management.

According to Matthias Waurick, the managing director of the public baths, a total of approximately 293,500 visitors enjoyed the baths this summer. The Georg-Arnhold-Bad had the highest number of visitors with 53,500, followed closely by the Stausee-Bad Cossebaude with 46,800, and the Naturbad Mockritz with 38,000.

Despite the good numbers, Mr. Waurick attributed the lower-than-expected visitor count to weeks of rain showers and cooler temperatures that affected the summer weather in Dresden. However, he also noted that July 9, 2023, was the busiest day at the baths this summer, with 18,500 guests.

One public bath, the Luftbad Dölzschen, will be closed next season for a planned renovation project. The project aims to modernize the facility, improve infrastructure, enhance energy efficiency, and upgrade the bathing and sauna areas to meet contemporary standards. The goal is to preserve the bath's historic charm while making it more comfortable and sustainable for visitors in the future.

The number of public baths in Dresden will decrease from nine to eight next season, as the Luftbad Dölzschen undergoes renovation. No further extension of the public baths' season is expected, but the weather-related extension this year was a pleasant surprise for visitors and management alike.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Waurick remains optimistic about the future of the public baths in Dresden. He believes that the high number of visitors shows that Dresden residents and tourists enjoy visiting the baths when the weather is summer-like.

However, there is still a lack of funds for a renovation project planned for one of the public baths. The city hopes to secure the necessary funds to ensure the continued success and modernization of these beloved public baths.

As the weather turns cooler, the public baths in Dresden are now being winterized in preparation for the colder months ahead. Despite the challenges, the spirit of camaraderie and relaxation that the baths provide remains a constant source of joy for the people of Dresden.
