Pair from the Middle East Decides to Pursue Ambitious Path Towards the American Way of Life
Couple Overcomes Challenges to Advance Dental Careers at Eastman Institute
Dr. Mohammed Almirza and Dr. Furqan Alwaely, a married couple originally from the Middle East, have made a significant impact in the field of dentistry at the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH).
Each year, the institution receives approximately 1200 applications for only 50 open spots in its Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. Despite facing stiff competition, the couple's determination and perseverance led them to the EIOH.
Initially, they were not accepted into the AEGD program the first two years they applied. However, in 2019, they were accepted into a 6-month Preceptorship at the EIOH. This was a crucial step towards their goal of advancing their dental careers in the U.S.
To pursue their training at the EIOH, the couple moved across the country from Washington State to Rochester, NY. Their journey was not easy, as they had to adapt to a new country and navigate the complexities of the U.S. dental education system.
During the Preceptorship, Dr. Furqan Alwaely demonstrated her heart for treating patients with special needs. Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammed Almirza showed his strong work ethic and willingness to help wherever needed.
Their dedication and skills led to their acceptance into the EIOH's AEGD program the following year. Dr. Mohammed Almirza was even chosen to be the ombudsman for the biggest department.
Throughout their journey, Drs. Almirza and Alwaely have been active participants in the General Dentistry Department's AEGD program. Dr. Mohammed Almirza functioned as a teaching assistant in Oral Surgery, Endodontics, and Orthodontics, while Dr. Furqan Alwaely assisted in Endodontics and the treatment of patients with Special needs and complex medical conditions.
Dr. Sangeeta Gajendra, clinical chief of Community Dentistry, expressed her pleasure of getting to know Drs. Almirza and Alwaely. She noted their strong desire to help others and their unbelievable work ethic.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Mohammed Almirza gave up his administrative time to help in all clinics. His gentle demeanor, ability to get along with everyone, and desire to make things right have helped him excel.
The couple graduated from their respective programs in late June and have been invited to join the EIOH faculty. Dr. Adela Planerova, the Director of the EIOH, encouraged Dr. Alwaely to apply for a fellowship with the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program.
Linda Lipani, EIOH Registrar, assisted the couple when they approached her for help in enrolling in the program. The couple moved to the U.S. in 2016 to provide a stable life for their two sons, aged 11 and 13.
