Planning the urban layout of Kleve's heart?
Kleve, Germany, is gearing up for a significant transformation as thirteen renowned landscape architecture firms have submitted their designs for the redevelopment of the city centre. The competition, aimed at determining the best vision for Kleve's future city centre, is a unique opportunity to make the area future-proof and present itself as a shopping city with a unique character by 2029.
The planning process for this ambitious project has been an inclusive one, with citizens and representatives of the retail sector given the chance to contribute their suggestions and ideas before the designs were developed. This collaborative approach ensures that the redesign reflects the needs and desires of the community.
The jury, consisting of experts in open space planning, members of the Kleve city council, and competent advisors, will evaluate these designs on October 7, 2025. Sensitivity is required when dealing with construction sites and their related restrictions, a factor that the jury will undoubtedly take into account.
Once the winning design is chosen, Mayor Wolfgang Gebing has assured that the involvement of citizens and retailers will remain a central element. The acquisition of urban development funding is planned for the redesign, with the basic funding application set to be submitted at the end of September 2025.
Following the jury's evaluation, an exhibition of the designs of the planning offices will open on October 28, 2025, in the city hall. The exhibition will offer everyone interested the opportunity to learn about the ideas of the individual offices and engage in discussions about the future of Kleve's city centre.
The city of Kleve will publish more detailed information about the exhibition in October. Construction sites for the redesign may result in necessary restrictions, but the end goal is a vibrant, modern city centre that will attract visitors and residents alike. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!
