Playa del Carmen Hotels Struggle as Occupancy Plummets to 37%
Playa del Carmen's tourism industry is grappling with a significant downturn, with hotel occupancy rates plummeting. Liliana Bravo Mena, outgoing president of AMEXME, and Offner Arjona, president of the Small Hotels Association, have both raised alarm bells about the situation.
Arjona painted a grim picture, describing the current state as a 'persistent bad streak'. In a particular week, the average hotel occupancy stood at a mere 37%. This is a stark contrast to the usual summer occupancy rates, which typically hover between 60% and 70%.
Bravo Mena echoed these concerns, revealing that some hotels had occupancy rates as low as 25% during the summer of 2023. She attributed this decline to the lack of comprehensive management of the sargassum phenomenon, a challenge the region has faced for years. Bravo Mena also highlighted the need for more robust tourism promotion abroad and addressing underlying issues to boost tourism numbers.
The low season is already fully felt in Playa del Carmen, with hotel visitor revenue under threat. Tourism stakeholders are calling for increased promotion and problem-solving to revive the industry. The low occupancy rates, blamed partly on the sargassum issue, underscore the urgency for action.
