Railroad area set for transformation into eco-friendly, habitable urban district

The City of Frankfurt is embarking on an exciting new venture, as it develops a modern and livable urban district around its Central Station. This ambitious project, spanning approximately 18 hectares, aims to integrate the station quarter into a contemporary urban context and serve as an inviting entrance to the city with a clear orientation towards the city centre.

The development plan for the Central Station Area has been approved by the Administrative Committee, following votes from the City District Council and the Planning and Construction Committee. The project will offer a mix of uses, including housing, work, leisure, and mobility, making it a vibrant and dynamic addition to the city.

The first phase of the train station quarter development will focus on infrastructure projects, such as bike parking houses, a quarter garage, and a new long-distance bus terminal. In the second phase, a large part of the area will be developed by an investment company. The Atrium Bummel Center will be demolished, and the existing Iduna high-rises will be supplemented by two block structures with predominantly residential uses.

Kurt-Schumacher-Straße will be rebuilt as a local street and bus connection in the second construction phase. The redesign of the Central Station Area also includes sustainable mobility concepts, such as an ambitious public transport system, attractive cycling facilities, and a new long-distance bus terminal.

In the third phase, the lanes of the ring road will be merged with expanded cycle paths while maintaining traffic performance. Buildings up to eight stories high are planned in this phase. The Park Viewegs Garden will be expanded, and a new entrance with clear orientation towards the city center will be created, directly opposite the main train station.

From September 25th to October 27th, the public can view essential documents on the current planning status at our website. A public event will also be held on October 9th to explain the planning and answer questions. The new station quarter is expected to offer space for around 600 residential units, with 30% in social housing.

The station quarter will become an integral part of the "Rail City" comprehensive framework planning, bordering this extensive development. The development of a modern and sustainable urban district around Frankfurt's Central Station is a significant step towards creating a more vibrant and connected city.
