Redesigned Play Areas: Contemporary, All-inclusive, and Varied Spaces for Kids' Enjoyment
In the heart of Gütersloh, four playgrounds have undergone a significant transformation, aiming to create a more accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable space for children and families. The project, initiated in 2020, has seen the renovation of playgrounds at Münstermannsweg, Kuckucksweg, Anna-Voß-Straße, and Birkhuhnweg.
Münstermannsweg now boasts a brand-new playground designed for children aged 3 to 12. The play area, built from April to May 2025, includes a Tampenschwinger, sand play area, standing seesaw, spring rocker, balancing path, central play area with speaking tubes, climbing path, seating areas, picnic group, and new shrubs planned for fall.
At Birkhuhnweg, the redesigned playground features a wheelchair-accessible playhouse and a terrain vehicle with a gas station, adding a touch of excitement for young imaginations. Other elements have been added to invite inclusive play on the redesigned playground.
Kuckucksweg's renovated playground, open since the end of 2024, offers modern, colorful equipment, natural wooden elements, and sustainability considerations. The playground features a 7-meter-high "DNA-Tower", zip line, multi-trampoline, inclusive sand play area, climbing mikado, climbing wall, rocks, ramps, slide, and picnic and seating areas. Two ramps now allow access with a wheelchair, enabling joint play in the middle of the area.
New tree and shrub plantings structure the entire playground, and materials such as paving stones and granite come from demolition measures for the expansion of the city's primary schools. The path-guiding tactile guide strip was made from granite paving stones from the former Konrad-Adenauer-Platz.
Anna-Voß-Straße's playground has been redesigned to create a clear, barrier-free area suitable for families. New paths have been added to improve accessibility, and additional seating and a spring boat have been added to the playground. A newly planted fence is intended to prevent dogs from entering the playground.
The multi-swing at Anna-Voß-Straße and the swings at Birkhuhnweg have been renewed, ensuring a smooth ride for all. The playground at the end of Avenwedde-Bahnhof has also undergone a large portion of redesign.
September 2025 marks the completion of the renovation project, with all four playgrounds now ready to be enjoyed by the community. The renovations not only modernize the playgrounds but also focus on accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the joy of play.
