In early January 2021, a beautiful neoclassical E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock was purchased in an online auction. The clock, with its rosewood veneer and intricate design, required restoration to bring out its true charm.

The restoration process began with cleaning the clock's case and dial. Diluted Murphy's soap and a light-colored microfiber cloth were used to remove dirt and grime without causing any damage. The dial, which was off-center due to two broken tabs securing it, was carefully restored by adding two new tabs and in-painting the numerals.

Two coats of shellac were applied during the restoration process to protect the clock's wooden surface and enhance its appearance. The brass bezel, inner brass ring, and strike side grommet were polished with Brasso as the final step, adding a shining touch to the restored clock.

The restoration of the E. Ingraham Grecian clock is complete, and the result is a beautiful piece that showcases the clock's neoclassical design. However, the internal 8-day mechanical movement requires servicing by a professional clockmaker.

When restoring antique clocks like the E. Ingraham Grecian, it's essential to handle them with care, avoid harsh abrasives, and preserve original finishes. Mild soap, soft microfiber cloths, fine steel wool (only on wood finish), and traditional shellac are suitable materials for cleaning and restoring these treasures.

With this restoration, the E. Ingraham Grecian clock is ready to stand the test of time once more, its ticking heart beating in harmony with the passage of days. The next step in the project involves servicing the movement of the clock, ensuring it continues to keep accurate time for years to come.
