Rhön Region's Annual Care Zone Day to Preserve Fruit Tree Stands
On October 24, 2025, a series of events will take place across the Rhön region to preserve its scattered fruit tree stands. These events, part of the annual CareCredit Day, aim to protect the unique cultural landscape and the old fruit varieties it harbours.
In Thuringia, a mistletoe pruning care action will occur in Friedelshausen from 2 pm. This is crucial as many orchards in the Rhön, particularly in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, face threats from infestation with white mistletoe. Meanwhile, in Hesse, workshops on nature conservation fruit tree care will be held at Burg Fürsteneck and the Forestry Office Hofbieber on the same day and time. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools, such as gloves, loppers, and possibly saws or ladders, to contribute effectively to the care efforts in Oberbach, Bavaria.
The scattered orchards of the Rhön are more than just fruit trees; they are a characteristic feature of the cultural landscape and serve as a Noah's Ark for old fruit varieties. Professional care measures, like those at the CareCredit Day, help preserve these trees and secure the valuable habitat in the long term.
The CareCredit Day is an annual event that focuses on preserving scattered fruit tree stands in the Bavarian, Hessian, and Thuringian Rhön. These care zones surround the core zones of the Biosphere Reserve, protecting them from external influences. By participating in these events, locals and visitors alike can contribute to the preservation of this unique cultural heritage.
