Introducing 'The King's Rose' - A Stunning and Unique Tribute to His Majesty King Charles III

David Austin Roses Has Unveiled Its Latest creation at the Chelsea Flower Show

Step aside, blushing brides and roses red! David Austin Roses has just dropped a bombshell at the Chelsea Flower Show. 'The King's Rose', a mesmerizing piece of nature's finest, has been unveiled as a majestic tribute to none other than His Majesty King Charles III.

This son of a gun doesn't shy away from bold strokes of color, as it proudly flaunts masses of semi-double papery petals striped in shades of fuchsia pink and dazzling white, creating an impression reminiscent of old Gallica roses - a hand-painted masterpiece, if you will. The scent's got some game too, boasting a light-medium musk fragrance with irresistible hints of fresh apple and creamy rosewater, peppered with the enticing aroma of cloves.

'The King's Rose' stands proud and tall, ready to rule the garden scene, reaching between 90cm to 1.2m, and multiplying like mad with at least 20 buds per stem. It sports a lush vase-shaped growth habit and heart-shaped leaves, making it an attractive and practical addition to any flower bed or border. And to top it all off, its vibrant yellow stamens serve as a beacon of welcome to our buzzing pollinator pals.

This bad boy is a pioneer for David Austin Roses, as it's the company's first foray into the world of striped roses. Carl Bennett, Head of Breeding at David Austin, sheds some light on this daring deviation from their usual pinky-red roses: "It may be Marmite, but many people love striped roses. This one is a wonderful shrub. It's very healthy and disease-resistant."

Carl further explains that the previous head of the Austin empire, David Austin senior, wasn't particularly interested in striped roses. When Carl took charge, he saw the potential for a new dawn of rosey possibilities, birthed from the desire to cater to the ladies and gents who have been clamoring for bicolor roses via Instagram and other social media platforms.

Proceeds from this magnificent bloom will support The King's Foundation and its ongoing mission of fostering sustainable communities.

Going Deeper...

David J.C. Austin, Chairman at David Austin Roses, expresses his pride and admiration for the one-of-a-kind blossom, stating, "The King's Rose' is particularly special - it's our first striped rose, created in collaboration with The King's Foundation. The rose is a tribute to the enduring values of His Majesty King Charles III through the work of the foundation, investing in education, sustainable practices, and the revitalization of heritage."

Born from a meticulous 12-year breeding process, 'The King's Rose' was carefully cultivated in the nursery, with the help of over 40,000 seedlings that underwent a tireless selection process, dwindling down to just one deserving candidate.

The rose's journey didn't end there. It took three years of expert care from His Majesty's team of gardeners in his private gardens at Highgrove, where it flourished in pots on the royal patio. It also became the mesmerizing centerpiece of the immersive secret garden-themed stand at Chelsea, as well as the star attraction of the Highgrove Shop.

If that weren't enough, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has also been honored with a rose created by Harkness Roses. You can read all about the breathtaking coral-pink rose created just for her.
