Southend-on-Sea Equips Itself with Eight Bicycle Digital Stations
In a bid to promote active travel and environmental sustainability, Southend-on-Sea City Council has unveiled eight new digital cycle hubs across the city. These hubs, funded through the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund, aim to improve the security and convenience of cycling for residents and visitors.
The cycle hubs are equipped with secure bike storage and charging points for e-bikes, making it easier for people to choose cycling over driving. They also boast green roofs, which not only look good but also contribute to biodiversity, making the city greener and healthier.
The access to these hubs is managed through an app, ensuring only registered users can gain entry. This measure addresses concerns raised during a six-week consultation held in 2021, where participants expressed that they would cycle more if their bikes were less likely to be damaged or stolen.
During the trial period, users can enjoy unlimited access to all the cycle hubs in Southend-on-Sea City for just £1 per month until mid-2025. After the trial period, the cost for cyclists to continue using the hubs will be £1 per day or £10 per month.
The cycle hubs are expected to play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in the city. This aligns with the council's commitment to combating climate change and promoting a greener, healthier city.
Lydia Hyde, Southend-on-Sea City Council cabinet member for climate, environment and waste, emphasized the hubs' role in environmental sustainability and climate resilience. She stated, "These cycle hubs are not just about providing secure storage for bikes; they are about encouraging active travel, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to a healthier, more sustainable city."
